Sustainable farming refers to a range of agricultural practices that are ecologically sound, economically viable, and socially responsible.
Sustainable farmers consider their profitability when choosing farm practices, but they generally recycle, conserve energy and water, and use renewable resources when possible.
Currently there is no official certification for sustainable farming.
The California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance is working to develop a certification program to accompany the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices. This certification standard is expected to become available in 2009.
At MWG we define “sustainable” using the following criteria:
1. Small family-farmers
2. Growers participate in the Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices
3. Wine quality and price
